Where/how did First Night® originate?
First Night® came into existence in Boston in 1974 to bring the neighboring communities of the city together in a
joint celebration while providing the public with an alternative way of ushering in the New Year.
The commitment of a group of private citizens to these goals marked the beginning of a new
tradition -
the First Night® celebration - that inspired many other communities to start their won First Night®
celebrations. As we prepare to host our Tenth Annual First Night® event, Haddonfield is proud to join
more than 200 cities and towns around the country - and around the world - in carrying on the tradition.

Why is it called "First" Night®?
A new year is about new beginnings. It is a time to discard the old, to forget the problems of the past, and to look ahead with hope
and optimism. The name "First Night" symbolizes this forward look, over the technically correct term "Last Night."
The name is also a symbolic reference to the opening night of artistic performances. And, because we tend to remember words that are odd combinations, the words "First Night" associated with positive feelings and memorable experiences, are unforgettable
each First Night® Celebration is identified by the date of the new year the event welcomes. So, although it will be held on December
31, 2009, this year's event is titled "First Night® 2010."

Are there events especially for kids?
Yes! There will be several children-oriented performers, as well as a special early countdown for those not old enough to stay up
until midnight.

How can I help out?
Although the planning for First Night® is carried out by a relatively small number of people - the members of the Steering Committee -
the implementation on the night itself depends on scores of volunteers. If you are interested in helping out, please call 429-4700 x300 and leave your name and telephone number. The Director of Volunteers will
contact you.
Note that you do not have to give up your entire evening (although you can if you wish!). Just a couple of hours of your time (and attendance
at a pre-event training session) is enough to make a significant difference. Note also that volunteers for December 31 will receive their own
First Night® buttons for FREE!

What about the weather?
Since most programs will be indoors (where it's warm and dry!) First Night® will take place regardless of weather conditions.
Outdoor activities may be modified, curtailed, or canceled, if necessary. For up-to-date information about snow and rain-related
delays and cancellations, check this site often.

When will the actual countdown(s) begin?
There are two countdowns. The first, at 9:00pm, is designed especially for the kids. It will enable young children to share in the magic of the occasion
and still get to bed at a reasonable hour. It will also enable parents to return, with the young ones tucked safely in bed and baby-sitters in charge,
for a few more hours of entertainment and revelry.
As midnight approaches, revelers will head for the center of town (the intersection of Tanner Street and Kings Highway) for the evening will be at
the Town Clock at the stroke of midnight as we greet the New Year, lock arms with family, friends, and neighbors, say to the tune of "Auld
Lang Syne", and watch in wonder as fireworks - yes, fireworks in downtown Haddonfield - light up the night sky.
